The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team lost, 27-9, Friday, May 2 on the campus of Long Island University. The Knights slid to 9-33 overall and 4-12 in the Northeast Conference, despite freshman first baseman Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney)'s career-best four hits and four RBI.
FDU outfielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) led-off the series with double to centerfield, but the junior was thrown out at third base. Freshman catcher Erik Pollag (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) stroked a two-bagger in the following at-bat, and was driven home by a ground-rule double by junior infielder Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay), as the Knights grabbed a 1-0 advantage.
However, the Blackbirds (15-27 overall, 6-11 NEC) responded with five runs off five hits in the bottom half of the frame. A seven-run outburst followed suit, leading to 12-unanswered runs by the home-standing squad.
Junior outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) singled and scored in the fourth, but LIU shifted the score to 22-2 in the bottom portion of the frame. After five, it was 27-2 in favor of the Blackbirds.
The Knights put up a five spot in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a two-RBI double by freshman outfielder Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire). An RBI two-bagger courtesy of Pollag, flanked by an RBI base knock by Sand, capped the surge.
Dillon smacked his first collegiate homer in the ninth, a two-run shot.
Junior right-hander Ben Green (Plainview, NY/JFK Plainview) started and was saddled with the loss, only going 2.0 innings. Freshman righty Chris Theordor (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) hurled 2.0 shutout innings.
Long Island junior right-hander Couri Benz went 7.2 innings, allowing two earned runs, collecting the victory.
Pollag and Sand chipped in three hits a piece.
Long Island senior catcher Danny Etkin finished with a career-high nine RBI off five hits. Junior outfielder Anthony Amatucci added five hits and four RBI.
Fairleigh Dickinson heads back to Brooklyn, NY for two against LIU at noon, Saturday, May 3.
