Baseball Takes CCSU Series with 2-1, Extra Inning Win

The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team topped visiting Central Connecticut State University, 2-1, in extra innings, Sunday. May 18.  The nightcap was cancelled, thus FDU concluded the season at 15-38 overall and 10-16 in the Northeast Conference.

Southpaw John O'Hara (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY) hurled his final game as a Knight, going the distance.  The senior struck out the side in the second and eighth, en route to sitting down eight, only allowing four hits through 8.0 innings.  O'Hara finished his career with a program-best 280 punch outs, while batting 7-for-11 on the weekend.

Central Connecticut (24-22 overall, 18-9 NEC) freshman infielder Pat Epps (Waterford, CT) ? who finished with two hits ? put the Blue Devils on top in the fourth frame, following a solo shot to right-centerfield.  In the sixth, FDU senior infielder Luis Rosario (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) (Bronx, NY) knotted the contest, 1-1, after an RBI groundout.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, first baseman Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) (Sarasota, FL) worked a walk to plate the winning run.  The sacks were full, with two outs, and a 3-2 count.

CCSU junior lefty Derek Roberts (New Britain, CT) struck out seven in 7.2 innings, but suffered the loss.  The Blue Devils will be the No. 2 seed in the NEC Tournament.

Junior outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) (Peekskill, NY) tallied a trio of hits and swiped two bases to move into second place in the single-season record books with 33 stolen bases.  Junior outfielder Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) (San Diego, CA) and Dillon reached twice.
