Softball Falls in Doubleheader to Fordham

The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team dropped a doubleheader at Fordham University on Tuesday, April 8. The Knights fell in the first game, 12-4, and the second game, 7-2. FDU is now 5-14 overall, while Fordham improves to a 17-19 overall record.

In the first game, the Rams scored 12 runs on 12 hits. They put up three runs in the first inning and added four in the third.

The Knights were able to put one run on the board in the top of the second as Lindsay Glidden (Peachtree City, GA/Starr's Mill) doubled down the left field line. Kristen Coughlan (Mount Royal, NJ/Kingsway) reached on a fielding error and Hope Hilman (Bremerton, WA/Olympic) sent a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Glidden.

FDU added another run in the top of the fourth to make it a 7-2 game.  Kim Carbaugh (Johnstown, PA/Richland) led off with a walk and Hilman sent a two-out single down the right line to score pinch runner Jessica Klein (Jersey City, NJ/Holy Family Academy).

Fordham added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and, despite a pair of runs by FDU in the top of the seventh, the Rams' three runs in the bottom of the inning sealed the 12-4 win.

Hilman was 2-for-2, with a home run and credit for all four of the Knights' RBI.

The Knights took the lead in the first game in the third inning, putting up both of their runs of the game to take a 2-0 advantage. Maria Finnegan (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) started things off with a single to left center. Klein advanced her with a sacrifice bunt and Justina Augustine (Geneva, NY/Geneva) moved the runner drawing a walk. With two outs, Ali Keltos (Shelton, CT/Lauralton Hall) singled to center field to push both runs across the plate.

But Fordham put up a huge third inning with six runs to take the lead. The Rams added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the final 7-2.

Augustine was 1-for-2, while Keltos went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

“There were a lot of individual plays that I thought we executed well,” said Head Coach Dale Martin. “I thought those were bright spots and we had some good hits. We need to continue to work out not allowing big innings for the opponent. In the second game, we have to work on not giving hits right back.”

“Fordham is a very good team and I thought that we minimized our errors,” said Martin.

The Knights are back in action when they host Lafayette on Wednesday, April 9 at 3:00 p.m.
