The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team lost, 18-5, at St. John's University, Wednesday, April 30. Junior outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, but the Knights slid to 9-32 overall.
The Red Storm, ranked 24th in the nation, used an eight-run eighth inning to improve to 32-10 overall.
SJU grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the second inning then pushed it to 4-0 in the following frame.
FDU battled back to a 4-2 deficit, as freshman catcher Erik Pollag (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) ? who reached twice ? drove in a run with a base knock in the fourth. A two-out rally in the top of the fifth evened the contest, 4-4, capped by a two-RBI double courtesy of junior infielder Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay).
The Knights' Big East foe answered in the bottom half of the inning, snagging a 6-4 lead.
Junior outfielder Brett Lazar (Commack, NY/Commack) notched an RBI single in the sixth, chipping FDU to a 6-5 margin.
Freshman right-hander Zachary Kisling got the starting nod and logged a scoreless frame. Rookie righty Spencer Kelly (Rockville, MD/The Bullis School) added a shutout inning via the bullpen.
FDU freshman right-hander Chris Theordor (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs over one inning. Conversely, SJU junior righty Justin Gutsie recorded the victory, despite allowing a pair of earned runs in relief.
St. John's registered 18 hits, with junior infielder Gino Matia collecting a four-hit evening. Senior infielder Jeff Grantham and sophomore first baseman Tim Morris added three-hit efforts.
The Knights travel to Brooklyn, NY, Friday, May 2 for a four-game series versus Long Island University. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
