The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team was once again victimized by the long ball versus visiting Sacred Heart University, Sunday, April 27 in Teaneck, NJ. The Knights dropped a 6-4 decision, and dipped to 9-31 overall and 4-11 in the Northeast Conference.
Sacred Heart junior infielder Phil Tantillo's (Blue Point, NY) two-run home run in the eighth proved the difference, breaking open a 4-4 ball game.
Fairleigh Dickinson freshman infielder Andrew Ahn (Manhasset Hills, NY/Benjamin Cardoza) (Manahasset Hills, NY) paced the home-standing offense, going 3-for-3, with two runs scored.
Junior outfielder Ryan Lynch (North Babylon, NY) triggered a two-run second inning for the Pioneers (9-30 overall, 7-8 NEC) with a lead-off triple into the right field corner. Freshman infielder Chris Whittemore (Lavellette, NJ) drove home SHU's first run, with junior outfielder Paul Schmidt (Amityville, NY) adding an RBI single.
In the bottom of the third, junior outfielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) (Murrysville, PA) ? who finished with two hits ? placed an RBI base knock through the left side, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1.
Whittemore made it 3-1 in favor of the visitors in the fifth frame, collecting an RBI single through the hole. Later in the inning, junior outfielder Brett Lazar (Commack, NY/Commack)'s (Commack, NY) fielder's choice with the bases loaded allowed Ahn to score.
Freshman infielder Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) (Garfield, NJ) set the table in the sixth with an infield single. Three batters later, Ahn ripped an RBI base hit into left field. Junior catcher Vincent Pennacchio (Huntington Station, NY/Commack) (Huntington Station, NY) tied the game, 4-4, following his RBI groundout.
Southpaw John Meadus (Mt. Holly, NJ/Holy Cross) (Mount Holly, NJ) was saddled with the loss, hurling 7.1 innings. The junior struck out six. Sophomore right-hander Corey Jeffers (Woodbine, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) (Woodbine, NJ) logged a scoreless ninth frame.
Freshman lefty Matt Fitton (Lebanon, CT) worked 7.0 innings to collect the second win of his collegiate career. For the second-straight game, sophomore right-hander Chris Zaccherio (Manhasset, NY) tossed 2.0 innings to earn the save.
Four Pioneers registered multiple hits.
