The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team shut down versus visiting Wagner College, 4-0, Sunday, April 20 in Teaneck, NJ. The Knights improved to 9-26 overall and 4-7 in the Northeast Conference, en route to splitting the weekend series, 2-2.
FDU took a three-run lead in the second inning. Junior outfielder Brett Lazar (Commack, NY/Commack)'s (Commack, NY) fielder's choice plated the first run, followed by a two-out, two-RBI base knock down the right field line courtesy of junior outfielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) (Murrysville, PA).
Junior lefty John Meadus (Mt. Holly, NJ/Holy Cross) (Mount Holly, NJ) hurled 9.0 innings, sitting down six. In the top of the fifth, he benefited from a twin killing with two men aboard, then pressed on to notch three-straight strikeouts looking in the seventh. Meadus only allowed one hit over the final two frames, while surrendering only two hits all afternoon.
Outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) (Peekskill, NY) sparked a two-out rally ? resulting in an insurance run in the eighth ? with a single to right field. The junior swiped second base then came around on an RBI base hit by freshman first baseman Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) (Sarasota, FL).
The Seahawks' (15-18, 7-5 NEC) sophomore right-hander Matt Watson (Howell, NJ) suffered the loss, tossing 6.0 innings. He allowed three earn runs and struck out five. Junior righty Andrew Heubner (Hatfield, PA) worked 2.0 innings, yielding one earned run.
Dillon was the only student-athlete for either team that went for multiple hits. Freshman Erik Pollag (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) (Sicklerville, NJ) reached base three times and scored a run. The catcher added a gritty defensive play in the second inning, as he scooped a throw from third base, blocked the plate, and tagged out a Wagner base runner.
The Knights ? who went 2-3 this week by smacking 43 hits ? now sit in fifth place in the NEC standings.
Fairleigh Dickinson travels to Newark, NJ, Wednesday, April 23 to face the New Jersey Institute of Technology at 8:00 p.m.
