Women's Soccer Opens 2007 Season With 3-1 Loss at St. John's

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team was defeated, 3-1, by home-standing St. John's University, Friday, Aug. 31 in Queens, NY.  The Red Storm (1-0) spoiled FDU's 2007 debut, tallying three goals in the final 17 minutes to edge the Knights.

In the 64th minute, midfielder Lora Lehr (Rosemere, Quebec/Villa Maria) (Rosemere, Quebec) surged through the right side to intercept a SJU clearance.  The sophomore dribbled deep into the box before goalkeeper Rebecca Capinera (Watertown, CT) stoned a far post attempt.  The Red Storm broke a scoreless contest 11 minutes later when midfielder Erin Bohn (Mission Viejo, CA) deposited a free kick into the upper left corner of the net.

Midfielder Raylynne Lee (Lake Stevens, WA) recorded the game-winner five minutes later from 12 yards out.  However, Fairleigh Dickinson responded, as senior forward Meredith King (/Corning East) (Corning, NY) headed home a service from senior defender Amanda Wheeler (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) (Marlton, NJ) in the 77th minute.

Midfielder Krystle Jalalian (Burien, WA) sealed the St. John's win with an unassisted scoring strike in the 85th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Rachel Derrico (/Canon McMillan) (Canonsburg, PA) registered seven saves in her second career start.

“We played a hard-fought game and it was anyone's to win entering the second-half,” Head Coach Renee Montana said.  “St' John's is a very good opponent and they capitalized on three critical mistakes.  There's a lot to build on from today ? I'm proud of our effort.”

The Knights travel to College Park, MD at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 2 to take on Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse University of Maryland.
