Baseball Topped by Mount St. Mary's, 13-5

The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team fell, 13-5, versus home-standing Mount St. Mary's University at Straw Family Stadium, Thursday, May 17 in Emmitsburg, MD. In the first ball game of a season-ending, four-game set, sophomore infielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) (Murrysville, PA) tallied a two-hit, two-RBI afternoon, as the Knights dropped to 9-42 overall and 4-20 in Northeast Conference ball games.

The Mountaineers (23-20 overall, 18-7 NEC) ? the league's first-place club ? grabbed an early advantage, plating four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double courtesy of infielder Mike Gioioso (Baltimore, MD).

Fairleigh Dickinson cut the deficit to 4-1 in the third frame. Senior outfielder Chris Grabowski (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY) was hit by a two-out pitch then swiped second base. Vincent, the ensuring batter, ripped an RBI two-bagger to left.

In the fifth frame, the Knights plated a pair of runs to trail, 5-3. Junior infielder Luis Rosario (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) (Bronx, NY) pulled a one-out base hit though the left side, advanced to third on a double by Grabowski and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vincent. Grabowski later scored on an error.

The Knights pressed on to a 6-4 hole the following inning, after sophomore outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) (Peekskill, NY) collected a two-hit base knock then stole second. Sophomore catcher Vincent Pennacchio (Huntington Station, NY/Commack) (Huntington Station, NY) brought home Maher, singling to right field. However, Mount St. Mary's responded with four runs in the home half of the inning, keyed by a three-run homer by infielder Drew Counselman (Sykesville, MD).

Grabowski ? who scored three runs in the contest, including the squad's first and last runs of the day ? crossed the dish on a sac fly off the bat of sophomore designated Bryan Greer (Boca Raton, FL/Olympic Heights) (Boca Raton, FL).

Lefty John Meadus (Mt. Holly, NJ/Holy Cross) (Mount Holly, NJ) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs in five innings of work. The sophomore sat down four.

NEC wins leader Dustin Pease (Baltimore, MD) hurled seven innings, notching his eighth victory of the season. The left-hander fanned five. Righty Costa Kopothanasis (Westbrook, ME) threw two innings of scoreless relief.

In addition to Vincent, sophomore first baseman Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) (San Diego, CA), senior infielder Jovan Santos (Woodhaven, NY/Archbishop Malloy) (Woodhaven NY) and Maher all collected multi-hit performances. Santos reached base on three occasions.
