The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team lost, 9-3, versus visiting Long Island University, Friday May 11, at FDU Field in Teaneck, NJ. The Knights slid to 8-37 overall and 3-17 in Northeast Conference action, despite a 1-for-1, two-RBI, performance by senior outfielder Vincente-Alexander Medina (North Bergen, NJ/Paramus Catholic) (North Bergen, NJ/Paramus Catholic).
The Blackbirds (10-33, 4-16 NEC) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, courtesy of a solo home run to centerfield by outfielder Frank DiMasi (Staten Island, NY), in addition to capitalizing on a plunked batter and a fielder's choice with the sacks full.
In the bottom half of the third inning, Medina plated sophomore infielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) ? who tripled to start the frame ? cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Long Island tacked on a tandem of runs in the fifth, as DiMasi deposited a pitch into right-centerfield for a two-RBI double. The Knights responded in the bottom portion of the frame, scoring a pair of their own. Vincent doubled home a run with a hot shot down the left field line and Medina notched his second sacrifice fly of the afternoon, creating a 5-3 ball game.
Sophomore lefty John Meadus (Mt. Holly, NJ/Holy Cross) (Mount Holly, NJ/Holy Cross) struck out four, logging six innings, while suffering the loss. Sophomore right-hander Matt Maltese (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) hurled 2.1 innings of relief, including working out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning.
DiMasi tallied his fourth RBI of the contest in the ninth inning with a single to centerfield. The ensuing batter, first baseman James Jones (Brooklyn, NY), added some insurance runs with a three-run shot over the centerfield fence.
Junior infielder Luis Rosario (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) (Bronx, NY/James Monroe/Rockland CC) collected a pair of singles, while senior infielder Jovan Santos (Woodhaven, NY/Archbishop Malloy) (Woodhaven, NY/Archbishop Molloy) reached base twice.
