Baseball Loses Monmouth Series Finale, 19-8

The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team lost 19-8 against Monmouth University, Sunday, April 22 at FDU Field in Teaneck, NJ. Sophomore infielder Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) drove in four runs, while senior outfielder Vincente-Alexander Medina (North Bergen, NJ/Paramus Catholic) (North Bergen, NJ/Paramus Catholic) tallied a trio of RBI's, as the Knights dropped to 8-27 overall and 3-8 in the Northeast Conference.

 

The Hawks (22-12-1, 7-4 NEC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before FDU grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the bottom half of the frame following a two-run homer to centerfield courtesy of Sand.

 

In the top of the third inning, MU infielder Mike Casale (Toms River, NJ) notched a two-out RBI double off the right field wall to knot the contest, 2-2.

 

Sophomore outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) lead-off the bottom of the third with a two-bagger to right field, immediately followed by an RBI double down the right field line by senior outfielder Chris Grabowski (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian), as the Knights regained the lead, 3-2. Sand lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Grabowski then Medina drove in sophomore infielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) (Belmar, PA/Franklin Regional) ? who earlier singled ? with a base hit to shift Fairleigh Dickinson ahead, 5-2.

 

The Hawks plated a pair of unearned runs in the fourth and fifth frames, creating a one-run ball game, 5-4.

 

Senior right-hander Stephen Eng (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) received a no-decision, allowing one earned run in five innings of work, in addition to tallying five strikeouts. Sophomore righty Nick Blanco (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond's) (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond's) suffered the loss in relief, surrendering four runs in a third of an inning.

 

Monmouth plated six runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run shot over the centerfield fence by outfielder Justin Braun (Stony Brook, NY), as the visitors regained the advantage, 8-5. Infielder Kyle Higgins (Green Brook, NJ) chipped-in a two-out double to right-centerfield to score a pair of runs and create a 10-5 margin.

 

Hawks' infielder Andy Meyers (Stratford, NJ) went yard to tack on two insurance runs in the eighth inning, followed by a tandem of two-out, two RBI doubles by catcher John Dennis (Union, NJ) and Higgins, giving MU a 18-5 lead.

 

Medina belted a two-run dinger to left-centerfield in the bottom of the eighth ? his fourth long ball of the season.

 

Freshman right-hander Michael Strachman (Roslyn Heights, NY/Roslyn) (Roslyn Heights, NY/Roslyn) tossed a hitless ninth frame.

 

Sand drove pitch through the left side in the bottom of the ninth to register his fourth RBI of the day.

 

Vincent and Sand recorded three-hit afternoons, while Grabowski, Medina and Maher each added two hits.

 

The Knights travel to Newark, NJ to take on NJIT at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 25.
