Baseball Loses a Pair at Delaware State

The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader versus Delaware State University, 2-1 and 3-2, Saturday, March 24 in Dover, DE. Sophomore infielder Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) (San Diego, CA) notched a pair of 2-for-3 performances on the afternoon, as the Knights slipped to 4-9 on the season.

In the first game, senior outfielder Chris Grabowski (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY) ? who went 3-for-3 in the contest ? singled in the top of the sixth and scored on a triple by Sand, shifting FDU ahead, 1-0.

However, the Hornets (9-10-1) connected on a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the frame to take the game.

Senior right-hander Stephen Eng (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) (Fresh Meadows, NY) took the loss, tossing six innings, striking out three and allowing seven hits.

In the nightcap, Fairleigh Dickinson tied to game, 1-1, in the top of the third inning. Sophomore outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) (Peekskill, NY) stroked a single and sophomore infielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) (Belmar, PA) scored on a throwing error.

An FDU two-out rally in the top of the seventh fell short. Trailing by two runs, Vincent notched his second hit in as many at-bats and scored on an RBI base knock courtesy of Maher, creating a 3-2 loss.

Junior lefty John O'Hara (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY) suffered his second loss of the season, logging 5.1 innings, en route to fanning four. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Hennessy (Mahopac, NY/Trinity Pawling) (Mahopac, NY) induced a groundball double play to work out of a jam in the sixth.

The Knights play a second twin bill against Delaware State at noon, Sunday, March 25.
