Softball Splits Doubleheader; Falling to Yale and Defeating Manhattan

The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team split in action at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, FL. The Knights lost to Yale, 6-3, and defeated Manhattan, 7-1.

FDU was down, 1-0, after one inning. Fairleigh Dickinson scored twice in the fourth inning to make it 4-2. Designated player Shauna Hawthorne (Largo, FL/Seminole) and Jaime Colvin (Fawn Grove, PA/Kennard-Dale) drove in Hope Hilman (Bremerton, WA/Olympic) and Lindsey Glidden.

The Knights picked up another run to make it a one-run game, 4-3, as Colvin drove in Hilman.

Hawthorne was 2-for-3 as with two RBI and Colvin, who came in as a pinch hitter and remained in the game, went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI.

Yale scored twice more in the seventh inning to make it a 6-3 final.

Fairleigh Dickinson won its first game of the season against Manhattan, 7-1 on the strength of 12 hits.

The offense was balanced as four different players had two hits each: Myers, Hilman Glidden and Hawthorne. Five different players plated runners, with Glidden pushing across three RBI. Ali Keltos (Shelton, CT/Lauralton Hall), Caitlyn Reuter (Richwood, NJ/Clearview Regional), Hilman and Colvin each had one. The Knights' defense turned two double plays as well.

Ashley Buchanan (West Windsor, NY/West Windsor) pitched a complete game to get the win.

“The game against Manhattan was the first time we played hard for all seven innings,” said Interim Head Coach Tammy Evans. “We got some clutch hits and clutch defensive plays and everybody contributed. I was very pleased with the composure our team showed in the sixth and seventh innings when Manhattan tried to rally. We played well, protecting the lead.”
