The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team opened its Northeast Conference slate, Friday, Oct. 5 with a 2-1 victory over St. Francis University in Loretto, PA. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Derrico (/Canon McMillan) (Canonsburg, PA) recorded three saves to lead the Knights (3-7 overall, 1-0 NEC) to their third-consecutive win.
In the 34th minute, Red Flash (3-7-1 overall, 0-1 NEC) junior defender Jennilee Morrison (Jeannette, PA) fed freshman forward Chelsea Traurig (McMurray, PA) for a breakaway opportunity. St. Francis (PA) took a 1-0 advantage, scoring in the lower left corner.
Just over two minutes prior to halftime, FDU knotted the contest, 1-1, following an errant clearance effort by the Red Flash that resulted in an own goal.
In the 71st minute, the Knights once again received help from their home-standing foe, as SFPA put in a second own goal, following an FDU cross.
“It was a very hard-fought game, back and forth ? St. Francis is a very good team,” Head Coach Renee Montana said. “This is a huge win for us coming out in first game of conference. I am extremely proud of game we put together and how we played for the full 90 minutes.”
Fairleigh Dickinson travels to Moon Township, PA to play Robert Morris University, Sunday, Oct. 7 at noon.
