Women's Volleyball Battles Past Lafayette, 3-1

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's volleyball team won its third-consecutive match against home-standing Lafayette College, 3-1, Friday, Sept. 8. The Knights (5-1) were powered by the junior tandem of outside hitter Elena Schmidt (/Nevada Union) (Nevada City, CA) and setter Ruth Levy (/Cary) (Cary, NC) who recorded their third-straight double-doubles.

FDU knocked off the Leopards 30-27 in the first game, but fell 32-30 in the second contest. The Knights ensued to put away their host 30-24 in game three, before falling behind 16-7 in the fourth game. However, Fairleigh Dickinson battled back to earn a 31-29 win, marking their best start under Head Coach Stacey Recanati's tenure.

“We showed a lot of heart tonight,” Recanati said. “This was one of our toughest matches thus far and we fought back in game four for the win. The girls pulled together and pushed hard for the win.”

Sophomore middle hitter Lauren Boothby (/Voorhees) (Glen Gardner, NJ) ? one of four players posting double-digit kills ? paced the offense with 16 kills, coupled with three solo blocks and seven block assists. Junior middle blocker Rebecca Tenney (/Tabb) (Yorktown, VA) chipped in 11 kills and four digs.

Schmidt racked up 10 kills and 11 digs, while Levy tallied 32 assists and 12 digs. Boothby and Schmidt both had three aces.

Sophomore outside hitter Megan Philbrick (/Elizabeth Seton) (Seabrook, MD) notched 14 kills, with sophomore setter Karolina Kowalski (/North Arlington) (North Arlington, NJ) adding 18 assists and nine digs.

Fairleigh Dickinson faces St. Peter's at noon and fellow Northeast Conference opponent Sacred Heart at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 in the back end of the Lafayette College Tournament in Easton, PA.
