Baseball Splits Twin Bill at Long Island on Friday

BROOKLYN, NY - The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team split two games at Long Island University on Friday, April 14. The Knights (7-21, 5-6 NEC) fell to LIU, 3-2, in Game One, but responded with a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, FDU got on the board in the fifth inning with an RBI double by senior catcher Matt Born. The Knights plated their second run in the seventh, as Born - who reached base on three occasions - worked a walk to plate freshman third baseman Brian Luchsinger.

Junior center fielder Chris Grabowski and freshman left fielder Matt Maher chipped in multi-hit performances.

Sophomore southpaw John O'Hara took the loss in the opener, fanning five through six innings and yielding two earned runs.

In the nightcap, junior right-hander Stephen Eng surrendered two runs in the first frame - one earned - as the Knights fell behind early.

Sophomore shortstop Jovan Santos sparked a four-run rally in the fifth inning, depositing a ball over the centerfield wall. Four batters later, Grabowski socked a two-run homer, pushing the Knights ahead, 3-2. Junior right fielder Vincente Medina drove a ball back up the middle for the fourth run of the frame.

In the top of the sixth inning, FDU tacked on an insurance run to make the score 5-2 via an RBI by Born.

Eng scattered eight hits over seven innings, en route to collecting his second victory in as many starts.

The Knights head to Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, April 15 for the rubber game of the series with first pitch slated for noon.
