Fairleigh Dickinson University and head women’s basketball coach Angelika Szumilo announced the hiring of Megan Cunningham as an assistant coach on Tuesday, June 4, 2019.

In her first season with the Knights, Cunningham helped guide FDU to the NEC Semifinals and earned the Knights first NEC Tournament win since 1992 with a 57-43 victory over Bryant. The NEC Quarterfinal was played at home, which was the Knights first home playoff game since 1997. The Burgundy and Blue finished the season with a total record of 13-17, which was a five-game improvement from the season prior. In conference action, FDU posted a 9-9 regular season record and claimed their 10th win in the NEC Quarterfinal, which is the most wins in league play since the 2003-04 season.

The Knights also had three team members earn NEC Yearly Accolades as Rachael Niles (Most Improved), Lauren Francillon (All-NEC Second Team), and Maria Roters (NEC Rookie Team).

Cunningham comes over to FDU after coaching at Northeast Conference rival Saint Francis (Pa.) as an assistant last season. She also previously worked for The Hoop Group as Director of Girls Events.

“Megan is a young but very mature up and coming coach,” Coach Szumilo commented. “What attracted me to Megan from day one was her work ethic, positive energy, confidence and eagerness to learn and develop as a coach. She has already shown how good of a recruiter she can be. I am very excited about working with Megan and believe she has a great future ahead of her.”

Cunningham helped guide the Red Flash to the NEC Championship game this past season and a 11-7 record in the NEC. She served as an assistant recruiting coordinator, developed workouts for the players and built scouting reports in her year with the Red Flash.

As a student at Division II West Chester, Cunningham volunteered her time to work with the Rams’ coaching staff for two seasons, primarily serving as the team’s video coordinator. She also played a role in conducting workouts, implementing a strength and conditioning program and serving as a community outreach liaison. With Cunningham on staff, the Rams went 27-17 in the PSAC which included a 17-5 conference mark (21-8 overall) and a NCAA Division II Tournament berth in her first season.

Before arriving in Loretto, Cunningham also worked with The Hoop Group for over a year as a skills director and director of girls events. She planned and coordinated camps of over 150 players that focused on skill work, player development and preparation for playing at the collegiate level. She was also responsible for marketing on various forms of digital media and managing finances for the Hoop Group Skills Camp.

A native of Hatboro, Pa., Cunningham graduated from West Chester in 2017 with a Bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics.
