NORTH EASTON, Mass. – Ana Salas converted a penalty kick in the 82' to lift FDU (4-2-3, 2-0-0) to a 1-0 victory at Stonehill (1-5-4, 1-1-0) on Sunday. FDU has now won three straight matches and collected at least a point in their last seven outings.
The match, which was moved up to an 11:30 a.m. kickoff, saw FDU produce 12 shots in the first half. Seven of these shots were on target, but the Stonehill keeper stopped each one.
While Stonehill produced just four shots in the opening 45 minutes, the Skyhawks nearly found a lead in the 35'. Kayla Cassidy's dangerous shot found the woodwork but stayed out to keep the game level heading into halftime.
Stonehill adjusted in the second half and found an evener share of quality chances. They tested FDU goalkeeper
Rosemarie Leblanc, but the junior stood tall. She made six saves en route to her second straight clean sheet and fifth on the season. Her final save of the match came in the 87
', which preserved the shutout and win.
The deciding penalty kick was the result of a Knights' rush into the Skyhawk's box.
Emily Villanueva attempted to track down a service in front of the six-yard box. After some contact, Villanueva went to the ground and drew the whistle.
Ana Salas stepped up to the spot and put the ball in the bottom left corner for her second goal of the season.
By the end of the 90 minutes, FDU outshot Stonehill 18-16, with ten of FDU's shots coming on goal.
FDU will host Mercyhurst at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, in Teaneck. The match will be streamed on NEC Front Row.
