NEW BRITAIN, CONN. – FDU softball dropped a doubleheader to CCSU to open conference play on Saturday afternoon.
FDU sent
Jamie Sencion out to start game one of the doubleheader. The Knights jumped on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a
Zoe Milonopoulos sacrifice fly. CCSU quickly responded to FDU. Reagan Vunak drilled a three-run homer in the bottom of the second, giving CCSU a 3-1 lead. Vunak would later add to the Blue Devil lead by hitting an RBI single in the fourth. CCSU would add three more insurance runs, taking a 7-1 lead into the sixth inning. The Knights battled back in the sixth, as
Mikayla Conklin hit an two-run double to cut into the CCSU lead. FDU was unable to keep the rally moving any further, however. The Knights would fall by a final score of 7-3 in seven innings.
FDU again jumped out to an early lead in game two of the doubleheader.
Mikayla Conklin stayed hot with the bat, hitting an RBI single to give FDU a 1-0 lead. The Knights had the bases loaded with nobody out in the first inning, but were unable to capitalize further, going down in order after Conklin's single. In the bottom half of the inning, the CCSU bats erupted again. The Blue Devils plated five runs, flipping the script on the Knights again. The offensive barrage kept up for CCSU as the game went on. The Blue Devils plated two more runs in the second to take a 7-1 lead. In the fourth, Grace Lawton hit a solo shot to make in 8-1. Then, in the sixth inning, Lawton went deep again, making the score 9-1 and ending things in a CCSU win.
FDU will finish the weekend with a 12 p.m. bout against CCSU. Coverage will be available on NEC Front Row.
