TEANECK, N.J. – The Knights continued their stellar recent form as FDU (6-2-3, 4-0-0) secured a 6-0 victory against Chicago State (1-10-0, 1-3-0). FDU has outscored its opponents 14-1 over its last three matches.
Nadia Wojcik opened the scoring in the 17
th minute for the Knights. An error by Chicago State goalkeeper Kamila Agular meant that a cross from
Laura Martinez found her all alone at the back post. Wojcik calmly put the ball in the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
The Cougars tried their best to withstand the Knights' onslaught of pressure, but gave in again in the 20
th minute. A beautiful move saw
Marina Burzaco rattle the crossbar, with the rebound falling to
Andrea Araujo. Showing great composure, Araujo took a touch and laid the ball off to the incoming
Candela Espana, who fired a shot into the side netting. This was Araujo's first point of her FDU career.
A moment of brilliance from
Ana Salas in the 33
rd minute found
Kelsey Spears, who in turn found the roof of the net to make the score 3-0 for the Knights. FDU would go on to get one more goal before the halftime break, again thanks to the service of
Ana Salas. She squared the ball across the Chicago State goal to find her fellow captain,
Marina Burzaco, who was able to take the opportunity. This brought Burzaco's goal tally for the season up to 7, whilst Salas got her second assist of the evening.
A 4-0 lead at the break and a 14-0 lead in shots over Chicago State appropriately told the story of a dominant first half.
Despite a slightly longer wait for the goals compared to the first 45 minutes, the Knights were eventually rewarded. In the 72
nd minute, Burzaco sent in a towering cross towards the back post, which found freshman
Andrea Araujo, who managed to loop her header over the Chicago State goalkeeper. This would add to her assist earlier in the evening and be her first goal in Burgundy and Blue.
Madeline Marricco capped off the successful evening's work in the 86
th minute. A scramble after a corner kick into the box eventually found the senior, whose shot rifled into the bottom left corner to make the final score 6-0 in favor of the Knights.
FDU will go on the road next to Dover, Del., to take on Delaware State in another NEC regular-season matchup at 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 8.
