HACKENSACK, N.J. – FDU women's basketball (19-4, 10-0) picked up a hard-fought victory over Wagner (10-11, 6-4) by a score of 52-45.
The Knights started off the contest in a good groove, jumping out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter. Leah Crosby led the charge to start the game for FDU, scoring seven of the Knights' first quarter points.
The second quarter saw the Knights' offense go cold, allowing Wagner the chance to get back into the game. The Knights converted just one shot from the field across the first six and a half minutes of the quarter. During that span, Wagner came back to cut things to just a two-possession game. The Knights finally buried a shot when Reese Downey knocked down a three, helping propel the Knights into halftime with a six-point lead.
FDU pulled away in the third quarter, out-scoring Wagner 17 to nine in the frame. The Knights went into the fourth quarter with a comfortable 14-point lead, and sought to cruise to victory. However, Wagner had plans to make things a little uncomfortable for the Knights.
The Seahawks got hot late into the fourth quarter, cutting the game to just two possessions. FDU held just a five-point lead with under a minute left after a quick 7-0 run by Wagner. The late offense for the Seahawks proved to be too little, too late, as the Knights were able to escape with victory.
