TEANECK, N.J. – Fordham (4-1-1, 0-0) scored the go-ahead goal with less than a minute to play to beat FDU (0-5-1, 0-0) 2-1 in Teaneck on Sunday afternoon. The Knights held a 1-0 lead after the first half but were unable to secure their first victory of the season.
"You are not going to dictate and control the game for 90 minutes against a team as good as Fordham", said head coach
Eric Teepe. "I thought in the first half we played our game and did the things we do well, but when we got pressured in the second half, we went away from our game."
It was a first half full of opportunities for both sides at University Stadium. The teams combined for 16 shots in the first half, with nine of them coming courtesy of the Knights. FDU's
Ana Salas was denied by the crossbar twice. Fordham hit both the crossbar and post on a pair of chances.
It was not until the 38
th minute that either team was able to convert a chance. The Knights curled a corner kick into the box that was initially headed by
Daniela Peschetti. After a deflection,
Dominique Liberto was able to pounce on the ball and bury it in the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
FDU took this 1-0 lead into the half.
Fordham equalized the match in the 50
th minute.
The game narrowed slightly after Fordham's goal. The teams combined for 12 shots in the second half, with FDU accounting for only five of them.
However, the Rams continued to attack. They had two goals disallowed due to offsides calls after they tied the match. With under a minute to play, they were able to score off a corner kick and seal the result.
The teams ended up even in shots at 14 a piece.
FDU is back in action on Thursday, September 11, at St. John's. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
