WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – FDU senior
Pyae Phyo Thu became the ninth Knight in program history to capture the men's golf NEC Championship individual title on Sunday afternoon at Kingsmill Resort. Phyo Thu strung together three sub-70 rounds and finished -7 to become FDU's first champion since 2016 (Florian Schroedl).
As a team, FDU put together a respectable showing. The Knights shot +17, which was good enough for a third-place finish. Howard (+8) captured the team championship.
Phyo Thu opened up his tournament with a 69 (-2). His first round consisted of three birdies and just one bogey. Trailing by two shots heading into round two, Phyo Thu posted a 68 (-3) converting five birdies to take seize control of the lead. On the final day, he fired another 69 (-2) to claim the championship. Phyo Thu did not make a bogey on the last 15 holes.
FDU finished day one in third place and remained there for the remainder of the tournament. Their best day came in round two when the team shot even.
Joining Phyo Thu in the top 15 were two other Knights.
Matus Kudlac shot +8 and finished 14
th, while
Ricardo Velasquez shot +9 to finish tied for 15
th.
Jake Portugal finished the tournament tied for 18
th, posting a +12. Kaung "Jordan" Kyaw rounded out FDU's scorecard with a +14, finishing tied for 25
th.

Phyo Thu's triumph earns him an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf National Championship.
