BALTIMORE, MD – FDU softball (7-10, 0-0) had a successful day to finish the UMBC Round Robin, defeating both Holy Cross and UMBC in a Sunday sweep. The Knights finish the UMBC Round Robin with a 3-1 record.
vs. Holy Cross
FDU started their day off with an early afternoon bout against the Crusaders. FDU defeated Holy Cross in their first meeting during the UMBC Round Robin on Saturday by a score of 9-2. The Knights pulled out another victory against Holy Cross, albeit closer by a score of 4-3. The Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead with some early offense. The Crusaders fought back in the late stages, shortening the lead to just one with a sixth inning rally. However, the Knights were able to shut Holy Cross back down and hold on for the victory.
vs. UMBC
The Knights stayed hot on offense, and immediately found themselves leading against UMBC. Brianna Holguin, Erika Barela, and Ayden Stone each came through with hits in the first inning to build a 3-0 lead for the Knights. FDU added some insurance with a Celeste Quezada RBI single in the second. UMBC did not go away quietly, however. The Retrievers rallied in the fourth, and scored four runs off of Julia Swan to tie the game at four. The Knights would turn to the fifth, where Mikayla Conklin would come through with an RBI single to give FDU the lead back. Swan settled back in and shut down the UMBC bats over the final three innings, giving FDU a 5-4 victory.
With the UMBC Round Robin wrapped up, FDU will now turn their attention to Northeast Conference play. The Knights will head to LIU for a weekend series starting on March 15 to begin the conference slate.
