Offensive Firepower Helps Knights Split Day One of UMBC Round Robin

BALTIMORE, MD – FDU softball (5-10) finished up their first day at the UMBC Round Robin with a split against Holy Cross and Rhode Island.

vs. Holy Cross
The Knights started off their weekend with an early morning victory over Holy Cross. The Knights offense came alive in the victory, as FDU emerged victorious by a score of 9-2. FDU trailed 2-1 after a strong fourth inning by Holy Cross. In the bottom half of the fourth, FDU flipped the script on the Crusaders with a big two-out rally. Brianna Holguin laced a two-run single to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. She was followed up by Madison Rishel, who connected on a two-run double to pad to the FDU lead. The Knights added some insurance with a four-run sixth inning to grow the lead to 9-2. The Knights got a gem out of Julia Swan in the circle. Swan pitched a complete game, posting a final line of 7 IP, 2H, 2R, 2BB, 5K.

vs. URI
FDU lost a thriller to URI in walk-off fashion in game two. The Knights fell 8-7 in seven innings to the Rams. The Knights gave a valiant comeback effort after being down 7-3 early in the game. FDU put together a big rally in the fifth inning. Celeste Quezada hit an RBI single to shorten the URI lead. Then, Ayden Stone stepped to the plate and delivered a monster blow. Stone hit a three-run shot to tie the game up at seven. Stone's home run was her first of the season, and the first by any Knight this season. The score held at 7-7 until the bottom half of the seventh, when URI put a few runners on. The Rams' Hannah Hernandez stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off RBI double to give URI the win.
