HACKENSACK, N.J. – FDU softball (12-13, 5-1) completed a weekend sweep of Mercyhurst (0-16, 0-6) with a 13-0 win on Sunday afternoon.
The win completed a 3-0 sweep in the Knights home opener series against the Lakers. FDU won both games in the prior day's doubleheader, and looked to make it a 5-1 start to conference play on Sunday.
FDU jumped out to a quick lead, plating four runs in a big first inning rally. The offense would continue to explode for the Knights throughout the day. FDU scored 13 runs to pick up a quick victory, with the mercy rule being implemented after FDU led 13-0 after five innings.
The Knights put things over the top with a massive fourth inning, where they plated six runs. It was a balanced offensive attack for the Knights, with eight different Knights recording hits. Five different Knights drove in multiple runs as well. Brianna Holguin continued a terrific weekend in her first series in Hackensack. After winning game two of Saturday's double-header with a walk-off single, Holguin had a 2-2 day on Sunday, driving in a pair of runs.
Knights outfielder Erika Barela also had a spectacular day at the plate. Barela went 3-3, driving in two runs as well. She was joined by Ayden Stone, who matched Barela's statline
In the circle, FDU received another masterful performance out of Julia Swan. The Whippany, N.J. native twirled a five-inning complete game shutout. Swan gave up just two hits and walked only one batter while striking out 11 in the process.
