NEC Finals Preview: #1 FDU vs. #2 Stonehill

HACKENSACK, N.J. – #1 FDU women's basketball (28-3, 16-0) will host #2 Stonehill (17-14, 11-5) at 12:00 p.m. in Hackensack, N.J. A Northeast Conference Championship will be on the line on ESPNU.

FDU will hunt for their third Northeast Conference Title in program history, and their first since the 1991-92 season.

The Knights have already clinched the Northeast Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. With a win over Chicago State in the semifinal, the Knights punched their ticket to the big dance. Stonehill is currently ineligible for post-season play due to being in the transition period to Division I, as was Stonehill's semifinal opponent in Le Moyne.

FDU will be dancing for the first time in program history, as the NEC did not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament when they won their previous title in 1991-92.

Despite the celebrations in Hackensack, the Knights' quest to "take the throne" is not done yet. One more game separates FDU from completing a perfect NEC season. The Knights finished the regular season with a 16-0 record in NEC play, becoming just the seventh team in conference history to be perfect throughout the conference slate. Only one of those team did not go on to sweep through the NEC tournament. FDU will look to be the sixth team ever to be perfect in the NEC.

Leading the charge for the Knights into the championship game is Teneisia Brown. Brown has found a ridiculous third gear in the NEC tournament. Across both the NEC quarterfinal and semifinal, Brown is averaging 25.5 PPG, and 11.5 RPG. She has recorded two double-doubles to extend her current double-double streak to 11 straight games.

Brown and the Knights will turn their full attention to a Skyhawks team that has surged as of late. Stonehill has won eight of their last ten, including each of their past four as they have charged into the NEC finals. The Skyhawks have won by an average margin of 20.5 across the NEC tournament so far. The Skyhawks defeated #7 Wagner 72-50 in the quarterfinals, and earned a trip to the championship game with a 60-41 win over #5 Le Moyne in the semifinals. Stonehill is led by a trio of Sharn Hayward, Brooke Paquette, and Kylie Swider, who each average double figures in scoring.

An NEC champion will be crowned on Sunday afternoon in Hackensack. Coverage will be available on ESPNU at 12:00 p.m.
