NORTHRIDGE, CA – FDU softball split two games on day two of the CSUN Champions Classic on Saturday. The Knights dropped their first contest to CSUN by a score of 9-1. They picked up a 6-2 win in game two over Montana.
vs. CSUN
The Knights dropped a tough contest to CSUN to begin their day. FDU jumped out to an early lead after an RBI single by Erika Barela. The 1-0 lead for the Knights quickly went away, as the CSUN offense exploded. The Matadors scored nine unanswered runs to wrap up the morning with a victory.
vs. Montana
FDU won a thriller in game two against Montana. The Knights and Grizzlies stood tied at one heading into the fifth inning. Celeste Quezada delivered for FDU in the fifth, lacing an RBI single to give the Knights the lead. The Knights would proceed to give up the lead in the bottom half of the inning, as Montana scored a run to tie the game at two. The Grizzlies began to threaten, putting the potential go-ahead runs on base. Chris Foye went to his bullpen, and brought Brooklyn Shroyer into relieve. Shroyer escaped the jam, and gave the Knights extra life. In the top of the seventh, the Knights had another golden opportunity to take the lead. With the bases loaded, Celeste Quezada came to the plate, and again delivered in the clutch for FDU. Quezada hit a bases-clearing three-run double to give FDU a lead. Quezada went 2-4 in the win with four RBIs. An extra insurance run was brought home on a Erika Barela single to put the score at 6-2 in favor of FDU. Shroyer closed out the seventh for FDU to give the Knights a win.
FDU will be back in action for the final contest of the CSUN Champions Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Knights will face Montana at 1:00 p.m. EST.
