TEANECK, N.J. – The FDU Knights (0-7, 0-0) faced the Saint Peter's Peacocks (3-5, 0-0) in their home opener but fell short in a 12-10 loss.
The Peacocks struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Knights leadoff man
Diego Urreta quickly answered with a solo home run to tie the game in the bottom half.
After Saint Peter's added another run in the second, FDU responded with an offensive surge during their turn at the plate. The Knights loaded the bases for freshman
Johnathan Gomez, who ripped a triple down the right-field line to clear the bases—his second triple of the season.
Joey DiMotta followed with an RBI to extend the Knights' lead to 6-2.
The Peacocks chipped away at the deficit in the fourth, scoring two runs on a single up the middle by Garrett Greco.
FDU's offense remained steady, adding three more runs between the fourth and fifth innings.
Jeremy Cheeseman,
Franklin Gomez Jr., and DiMotta each drove in a run to push the Knights' lead to 10-4.
However, Saint Peter's mounted a late comeback, scoring two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings before a ninth-inning surge erased the Knights' four-run lead. Ashby Vining played a key role in the rally, blasting two home runs and driving in three runs to propel the Peacocks ahead.
The Burgundy and Blue were unable to respond in the bottom of the ninth, sealing the 12-10 defeat.
