Knights Sweep Lafayette in Home Opener

HACKENSACK, N.J. - FDU women's volleyball played their first home match of the season, taking on Lafayette to open their run in the FDU Invitational Presented by Hilton of Hasbrouck Heights. Coming off a five-set loss to Fordham earlier today, Lafayette was unable to find a response for the Knight's stellar offense and the Burgundy and Blue took the match with their first sweep of the season.

The Knights found themselves down in set one when Lafayette jumped to an early 14-10 lead to start the match. Finding energy and momentum, the Burgundy and Blue not only caught up to the Leopards but took the lead with help from three kills from sophomore Avery Bain. FDU held Lafayette to a hitting clip of .053 while hitting .250 themselves. A scrappy defense and consistent offense led the Knights to a set one victory of 25-20.

Set two saw a better start from the Burgundy and Blue, who took control of the match early with an aggressive offense. Tallying 18 kills on only 33 swings, the Leopards were unable to find an answer for the hot hitting Knights. Junior Kylie Nott totaled seven kills on the set, hitting an impressive .875. With an unstoppable offense, FDU cruised to a 25-17 set two victory.

Pulling off momentum from a dominate set two win, the Knights opened the third with an ace hat trick by senior Hannah Schmidt. Schmidt's service run brought the Burgundy and Blue to a 6-0 lead to kick off the set. Despite a brief comeback attempt by the Leopards who brought the score back to 10-10, the Knights and their steady attacking took the set and match victory 25-16.

The Knights return to action tomorrow (09/14) as they take on Fordham and Lafayette to close out the tournament. First serve against Lafayette is scheduled for 1 pm.
