RIVERSIDE, Cali – The FDU Softball Team (0-2) lost both games of a season-opening doubleheader Friday night against California Baptist.
GAME 1
The first game of the day was a tightly contested matchup through the first three innings.
Freshman
Brooklyn Shroyer started strong in her first collegiate start for the Knights. The San Dimas, California native struck out four Lancers through the opening three frames. Shroyer finished with three and two thirds innings pitched, four strikeouts, no walks, and five runs allowed (one earned).
California Baptist starter Morgan Mcconnell was nearly perfect, as the Knights offense was never able to get going. She allowed just one hit and two walks over a seven-inning complete game shutout which included six punchouts.
Abbey Hoesman recorded the lone hit for the Knights, a one-out single to right field in the top of the second inning.
FDU aimed to rally in the top of the sixth inning when
Erika Barela and
Megan Berg reached on back-to-back walks with one out, but the pair were stranded by Mcconnell.
The Lancers broke through with a four-run fourth inning. After a one-out double, Shroyer was able to record a flyout before surrendering all four runs with two outs.
MaryJane Limon entered the circle the final two and one third innings for the Knights giving up one run on two hits, recording her first collegiate strikeout in the process.
GAME 2
After a scoreless first, California Baptist pushed across two runs in the second inning. The Lancers strung together five straight one-out singles to score both of their runs in the frame.
The Knights went down quietly in the top of the third before the Lancers plated two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a pair of doubles following a leadoff walk.
California Baptist tacked on their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-out triple in left center.
Andreya Flores and
Abbey Hoesman recorded the only two hits for the Knights off of Lancer pitcher Presley Hosick who went the distance punching out six.
Julia Swan pitched four innings for FDU, with
MaryJane Limon getting the final six outs.
