BRIDGEWATER, N.J.- Freshman sensation Brooklyn Shroyer earned notable acclaim this week, securing the titles of CO-Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week. Her exceptional performances on the pitching mound not only bolstered the team's triumphs but also highlighted her remarkable talent and potential as a newcomer to FDU.
Shroyer showcased her prowess on the mound as the Knights clinched three consecutive victories over the weekend. She was credited with all three pitching decision wins, starting two games and providing relief in another.
In the first matchup against Bucknell, Shroyer delivered a standout performance, pitching a full seven innings and tallying eight strikeouts while allowing only four hits and two runs. The Knights secured a 3-2 victory, propelled by timely hitting from Abbey Hoesman, who went a perfect 2-2 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Andreya Flores' go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, coupled with Shroyer's dominant pitching in the seventh, sealed the win.
Shroyer once again showcased her mettle in the second game against Bucknell, entering the mound in the top of the sixth inning. She recorded the final four outs of the game, including two strikeouts, setting the stage for the Knights' dramatic walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh, secured by a pinch-hit RBI single from Zoe Valdez which resulted in a 7-6 triumph.
In the weekend finale against Hofstra, Shroyer delivered the standout performance of her young career. Having already secured two wins, she entered the game in peak form, striking out the nine batters in the first thee innings. Her momentum continued, ultimately tallying a remarkable 17 strikeouts in seven innings while conceding only three hits and four walks. This impressive feat of 17 strikeouts now stands as the highest number recorded in a single DI game this season.
In total, Shroyer pitched 15.1 innings over the weekend, amassing 27 strikeouts while conceding only seven hits and two earned runs. Her outstanding weekend performance rightfully earned her accolades from the NEC, solidifying her status as a rising star on the pitching mound.
Abbey Hoesman joined Shroyer in garnering conference recognition as the senior first basemen picked up a Prime Performer nod. Hoesman was red hot at the plate over the weekend, going an almost perfect 7-8 from the dish while recording three doubles and two runs batted in for the Knights. After her stellar performance at the plate this past weekend, Hoesman now has the highest batting average on the team at .450.
Up next, the Knights will travel to Hampton, Virginia, to participate in the HU/NSU Classic on March 1st, playing in five games across three days. The action begins with a matchup against Hampton at 12:30 p.m.
