STORRS, CT – FDU women's basketball (4-1, 0-0) heads out on the road to continue their non-conference schedule, facing No. 2 UConn (3-0, 0-0) in a Wednesday night bout. The game will tip off at 7:00 p.m, with coverage on SNY.
The Knights head into Storrs coming off of their first loss of the season, suffered back on Sunday, Nov. 17 on the road against Syracuse. An 18-point performance from freshman
Ava Renninger was not enough for FDU in that contest, as they fell 77-58.
Renninger's impressive performance on the road helped her to secure a second straight NEC Rookie of the Week award. Renninger, who leads the Knights with 14.6 PPG, has now won Rookie of the Week in each of the two weeks awarded by the conference this season.
Despite falling their last time out, FDU is riding high to start the season, and will look to continue the good vibes on Wednesday. The Knights began the season off with a 4-0 record following a home win over Bucknell on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The 4-0 start was the first for FDU since their NEC title-winning 1991-92 season.
FDU heads to Connecticut to face a second straight high-major opponent. The Huskies are currently ranked as the #2 team in the nation, following the latest poll by the Associated Press. UConn is led by superstar Paige Bueckers, the projected #1 overall pick in the upcoming WNBA draft.
Bueckers is currently the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, following an impressive 29-point performance in UConn's win over No. 14 North Carolina their last time out. UConn also picked up a weekly honor from Sarah Strong, the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Strong averages 14.7 PPG as a freshman, which is good for 16th in the nation amongst all first-years. Right behind her in the rankings is Renninger, who is 17th with her 14.6 PPG total. The two freshmen will be exciting young names to watch in the contest.
This will mark just the second time that FDU and UConn face off. UConn leads the all-time series 1-0, winning the lone contest back on Nov. 25, 2011.
