LORETTO, Pa. - After plating home no runs in 14 innings of play yesterday, FDU softball came back strong with eight runs in a one-run defeat to Saint Francis U Saturday, capping the three-game series with three Red Flash victories.
Falling behind 2-0 early in the home first with an RBI single off the bat of SFU's Rachel Marsden, the Knights etched a run in the fourth with junior
Abbey Hoesman scoring off the first of five RBI from the bat of fellow third-year
Megan Berg. Down 3-1 heading into the fifth, FDU exploded for a six-spot in the frame with Berg blasting a grand slam, her first collegiate round-tripper, to give FDU a 7-3 lead, following up
Hayden Salter's double to score
Cassidy Triska and
Courtney Mahoney.
Saint Francis U would strike back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Grabbing the lead for the second time in the top of the seventh,
Savannah Thornell would plate
Angela Costa and push FDU in front 8-7 with one half of an inning to play.
The Red Flash would walk things off in the bottom of the inning to move to 10-2 in NEC play.
Chris Foye turned to the Knights' stable of arms with
Julia Swan making her second start of the series relieved by
Malori Bell and
Alayna Savaglio, though it would be latter of the trio named pitcher of record on the short side of the result. FDU pitching recorded just one strikeout in 39 batters faced while FDU batters were fanned eight times by the Red Flash.
Taking a break from the NEC circuit, FDU makes the trip to Lafayette for a non-conference doubleheader with the Leopards at 3 and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12 before continuing NEC play on Saturday with a three-game series against Central Connecticut.
