Mahoney Tallies Five Hits as FDU Splits Doubleheader at Lafayette Wednesday

EASTON, Pa. - FDU softball (17-20, 5-7 NEC) got back in the win column Wednesday afternoon as the Knights topped Lafayette 3-1 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader that saw FDU fall in late innings to the Leopards in the nightcap by a 6-5 final.

Both games of the twin bill got started with a leadoff single by senior Cassidy Triska who handled shortstop duties. Triska went 3-for-7 on the afternoon. Plating two runs home in the top of the first inning, the scoring affair began with an RBI groundout by sophomore Andreya Flores to score Triska with each of the first three FDU batters reaching base safely. On the play, Courtney Mahoney, graduate student center fielder, advanced to third after already rounding first to second on her own single and a throwing error by the Leopards' right fielder. With a walk drawn by Savannah Thornell, FDU had two runners on with one out and rookie Destiny Sevilla sacrificed her at-bat to score Mahoney and give FDU an early 2-0 advantage against the Patriot League side.

Triska currently holds FDU's longest active on-base streak at six-straight games.

Despite allowing a pair of walks, fifth-year pitcher Alayna Savaglio navigated trouble in her first inning of work, recording two of seven strikeouts in the opening frame. The FDU defense and Savaglio's arm would shut down the home side until the third inning when they recorded their first hit of the day, a double by Kylee Sweet to right field. Chris Foye's club would continue to gain baserunners down the stretch while Mahoney would involve herself in the third run of the game as a single up the middle would score sophomore Isabelle Herring to give FDU a 3-0 lead in the fifth.

The lone run of the ballgame for Lafayette in the opener would come off a solo home run in the last of the seventh with two of the next three batters retired via line outs to the infield to give Savaglio her sixth win of the campaign and earn sophomore pitcher Payton Wagner her first save of 2023.

FDU would put up a three-spot in the opening inning of the nightcap as Sevilla would score Triska to break open the line score at Lafayette Softball Field. Despite the early lead, FDU would play from behind after two second inning runs leveled the scoring at three runs. Lafayette would tack on three in the fifth, including two off another home run with the Knights now behind 6-3. Angela Costa and Alex Hooper would keep the Knights' hopes alive with two runs batted in as a late rally began in the seventh, however the comeback effort would fall short as the Burgundy and Blue dropped the second game of the session by one run, 6-5.

Northeast Conference play resumes at home for the Knights this weekend with FDU scheduled to welcome-in Central Connecticut on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and again on Sunday at 12 p.m. with all three games of the pivotal league series airing on NEC Front Row.
