Lim and Trainauskas Capture NEC Major Awards

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. - FDU men's tennis sophomore Justas Trainausksas collected his second major award in the Northeast Conference in as many seasons as the 2022 NEC Rookie of the Year was crowned the league's Player of the Year, announced Thursday afternoon. Trainauskas was joined atop the awards list by women's tennis newcomer Anastasia Lim who was tabbed Rookie of the Year on the women's side, the Knights' first since Aleksandra Vorozheikina earned the nod in 2019.

In total, nine men and six women earned All-NEC honors following the 2022-23 campaign. FDU's men finished second in the NEC tournament while the women were semifinalists for the second-consecutive championship.

Hailing from Vilnius, Lithuania, Trainauskas earned a trio of honors this year, including as the top player in the league, as the mainstay at first singles earned First Team honors at both singles and doubles, paired with Thomas Linley. Finishing his final season at FDU with a staggering 25-5 record (.833) in singles, Trainauskas went 6-1 against NEC foes with the lone loss coming in the NEC final against St. Francis Brooklyn's Jan Godfrey Seno, also a first team honoree. Finishing his last 10 matches 8-1 with one unfinished, the former Rookie of the Year shook off a spring semester-opening loss on February 4 to win each of his next eight.

Paired with Linley, the duo went 15-7 with 10 wins at the first doubles position and an unbeaten 3-0 in the second flight. 5-2 in NEC play as a tandem, Linley and Trainauskas opened the year with three wins together in their first five tournament matches during the fall including wins over Saint Joseph's, Hofstra and Fairfield.

Also earning First Team honors for the Knights is graduate student Mehdi Dhouib who caps a brilliant five-year career at FDU this season. The reigning NEC Player of the Year, Dhouib battled injury for 13 singles victories, seeing dual match action at the second, third and fourth flights with a record of 11-5 in those competitions. After missing the bulk of the fall due to an injury, the Iona Prep grad started the spring 4-2 before turning up the heat in NEC play with four conference victories.

Dhouib and junior Younes Adnane earned a First Team slot as a doubles squad with the duo finishing a perfect 5-0 in the NEC. Adnane and Dhouib posted an 11-4 record overall and ended the campaign an impressive 10-2 at the second doubles flight. They finished the season 10-0 with their last loss coming on a tiebreaker on February 17 at Delaware.

Earning Second Team All-NEC honors on the men's side were Teodors Pukse and Arjun Sriram. Pukse finished his final four singles matches 4-0 after going 8-8 during the season. Sriram shined at fourth singles with seven wins at that position for a total of 15 victories on the year.

Pukse and freshman Gryffin Minor rounded-out the doubles events for the Knights, logging a 10-1 record with a 6-1 mark in NEC play. Their lone loss of the campaign came in the conference final.

Three Knights earned All-Rookie Honors with Jorge Alonso-Cortes, Minor and Joshua Oboniye earning nods. Alonso-Cortes logged three doubles wins in the fall and finished singles play 8-5 with a 4-4 record in tournament play. Minor, in addition to his aforementioned doubles achievements, was only behind Trainauskas in singles victories, going 17-12 in his first season at FDU. Minor was 6-1 in-conference and a perfect 4-0 in sixth singles action for Jeff Brandes' side.

On the women's side, Lim posted 10 wins in her rookie season with two NEC victories to her name. 4-4 in dual match action. The Kazan, Russia product was also an NEC All-Rookie Team honoree. Joining her on the Second Team All-NEC was sophomore Namie Isago, a product of Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Isago was undefeated in conference play logging 13 wins. She completely her season unbeaten in her final five contests.

Isago and her doubles partner Alena Kubanova earned Second Team All-NEC honors after the tandem ground out 12 victories, half of which came in the league. They finished 7-3 to close the season.

In addition to Lim, Madeleine Graber and Valentina Silva earned All-Rookie nods. Graber notched nine wins in her first season in the Burgundy and Blue and Silva rallied for a 15-10 record with a 6-1 mark in sixth singles.
