Knights Sweep the Hornets with an 8-1 Sunday Victory

TEANECK, NJ - FDU (16-9-1, 8-4) wrapped up their conference series with Delaware State (6-19, 2-10) with an 8-1 win.

How it Happened
  • Delaware State opened the scoring in the second inning. The Hornets led off with a single and then a double off the wall that stayed in the ballpark due to the wind. Hunter D'Amato made a heads up play tagging the runner out at third on a ground ball, but a walk and then a ground out to TJ Werner allowed the first run.
  • The Burgundy and Blue responded in the bottom of the third that saw a Werner walk lead to a run as a Joan Sosa double to left center drove him in.
  • In the fourth, FDU took back the lead. D'Amato and Justin Sierra struck with back-to-back singles. On Sierra's single, the left fielder overthrew third base allowing D'Amato to take third base. Luke Cantwell then grounded out to first baseman who then threw home, but D'Amato's head-first slide avoided the tag and brought the score to 2-1.
  • FDU kept the pressure on in the sixth inning. The wind kept another would-be home run in-play for a double by Brian Sanders. D'Amato then laid down a perfect bunt down the first base line, putting runners on first and third. Sierra then grounded out to short but was enough to get Sanders home
  • Cantwell then beat the pitcher and the wind, driving a two-run home run just inside the right field foul pole for his ninth home run on the season to make it a 5-1 game
  • After the Hornets hit two FDU batters, George Rosales came through with a two-RBI double down the left field line extending the lead to 6 runs
  • The Knights added an insurance run in the eighth. Walks came back to hurt the Hornets as Cantwell and Brelon Harden both reached base. A sacrifice bunt from Werner advanced the runners and Sosa came through with an RBI single to center field
On the Mound
  • Ethan Rembish returned to the mound and delivered four innings, giving up one run and striking out five
  • Brendan Medoro came on in relief of Rembish and threw three no-hit innings and keeping the Hornets at bay with one run
  • Grant Goodlad pitched the 8th and 9th innings for the Knights while only allowing one hit and striking out four batters to close out the game
