HACKENSACK, N.J.- Year two of FDU men's volleyball came to a close on Saturday with a sweep over D'Youville. This is the first NEC sweep ever for FDU. The win marked the fourth home win of the season for the Knights and brought their overall record to 7-17. Unfortunately, FDU's 4-10 NEC record did not qualify them for the NEC Championship.
Fresh off their victory over Daemen on Friday, the Knights took to the floor ready to play again. A 7-2 run made the score 11-7 in favor of the Knights in set one and forced the Saints into taking a timeout. The timeout did them no favors however, as D'Youville could never cut the lead to closer than three. A service ace from
Lorenzo Bonomo ended the set 25-16.
Set two proved to be much tighter. In fact, it was about as close a volleyball set can get. No team held a lead larger than three. In addition, the score was tied at 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24. A kill from
Jamal Ellis Carballo gave his team their second set point, and
Artem Vetrov converted it with a kill of his own. The Knights took set two 26-24.
The Saints showed fight early in the third and grabbed an 8-3 lead. Then, Ellis Carballo got the chance to serve and everything changed. He recorded four aces and two kills in an 8-0 Knights run that gave them the 11-8 lead. FDU never looked back. Their attack was too good and too efficient for D'Youville to make a comeback. The Knights closed out the final set 25-18.
Despite their season coming to a close, FDU saved their best volleyball for last. They held the Saints to a .157 hitting percentage, while hitting it at a .256 clip themselves. FDU totaled eight aces and four blocks to go along with their attack.
Jamal Ellis Carballo wrapped up an excellent rookie campaign with 17 kills, four aces, five digs, and two blocks. He finishes the season near the top of the conference in many offensive categories. He was helped by another strong game from
Ethan Young, who when he got healthy was a huge addition for the FDU offense. He had nine kills in the sweep.
In his last match as an FDU Knight,
Rui Fernandes had 31 assists and eight digs. He finishes his career with 1071 assists.
