Offensive Production and Strong Pitching Helps FDU to Twin Bill Split with Central Connecticut Friday

HACKENSACK, N.J. - FDU softball fell by a pair of runs in the first game of a doubleheader Friday before coming back to topple Central Connecticut by a 3-2 tally in the nightcap as the Knights go for the series win tomorrow, April 15 at 11 a.m.

Alayna Savaglio threw in the opener and was blemished early with a run allowed in the top of the first before her teammates picked her up with an RBI single off the bat of Abbey Hoesman in the bottom half, followed by a sacrifice fly from Andreya Flores to give FDU a 2-1 lead. Three-up-three down with a trio of strikeouts in the scorebook, Savaglio was shoving in the circle before a pair of runs were scored against her, including an inside the park home run. The latter run was unearned.

After another one-two-three frame in the fifth, the Knights' lone baserunner in the home half was a walk though nothing would come of the base runner as the Knights dropped the first game of the series 4-2.

Head coach Chris Foye turned to Malori Bell to start the second game and the senior dominated with just three hits allowed through the first three innings as the sides were drawn in a scoreless heat through the first trio of frames. FDU got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth with Flores batting home Sydney Newton. Central Connecticut answered back with with a solo homer to left centerfield to even things at one down the stretch. An RBI double down the stretch in the sixth put the Blue Devils ahead by a run.

The Burgundy and Blue offense got cooking in the home sixth with Hoesman doubling to center to score Brandi Mitchell and Flores plated home Sophia Ayala for the game-winning run as Savaglio returned in relief of Bell one batter into the seventh inning to secure her first save of the campaign.

FDU closes the three-game set with the Blue Devils tomorrow, April 15 at 11 a.m. live on NEC Front Row.
