STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Knights (16-5, 8-1) traveled to Staten Island, N.Y. to face off against conference rival Wagner (11-9, 6-3). The Knights took care of the Seahawks early and never let them feel like they could get into the game. FDU defeated them 67-50 behind the fourth double-double of the season for
Chloe Wilson; she had 12 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists.
Dahomée Forgues pitched in a team leading 14 points and
Ella Fajardo gave the Knights 10 points off the bench.
The first 10 minutes opened with the Knights and Seahawks trading baskets as both teams started slowly from the field. During the first media timeout about halfway through the quarter, the Knights held a 6-4 lead. The remaining five minutes of play saw the Knights take over with a 9-4 run and lead 15-8 heading into the second quarter. FDU forced Wagner into six first-quarter turnovers and capitalized by scoring seven points off those takeaways.
Dahomée Forgues lead the way for the Knights with seven first-quarter points.
The second quarter started much differently for the Knights; they let Wagner go on a 5-0 run to begin the quarter and bring energy back into the Spiro Sports Center. FDU weathered the storm and got big-made shots from
Celia Carbonell and Forgues to help them maintain their lead into the media timeout. The Burgundy and Blue outscored Wagner only 15-14 in the quarter but held the Seahawks to 37% shooting. In the first half, Wagner was held to 32% shooting from the field, 16% from behind the arc and they turned the ball over 10 times. The Knights shoot the ball well from the floor making 12-of-25 shots in the first half. Turnovers from FDU was the reason they did not have a larger halftime lead.
The Knights opened the second half with another good shooting performance; they were 3-for-5 from the field at the media timeout and were holding Wagner to a lowly 2-for-8 from the field. Despite 16 FDU turnovers midway through the third quarter, they held on to an 11-point lead from that stifling
Angelika Szumilo defense. A 5-0 run capped by a Forgues three forced the Seahawks to call a timeout as they trailed by 15 points. FDU ended the third quarter outscoring Wagner 18-11 in the quarter behind seven points from
Sierra DeAngelo and five points from
Madeline Selvaggi.
The fourth quarter started with the Knights winning by 15 points and they started the final 10 minutes on a 7-0 run to officially put the Seahawks out of reach. The win was a typical FDU defense and three-point shooting clinic.
- FDU will host LIU Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Stratis Arena inside the Rothman Center. Knights fans who cannot attend can watch the game on NEC Front Row.
