SAN DIEGO - FDU softball fell to 4-5 on the young season Saturday as the Knights were held scoreless against Boise State and (RV) Wichita State on the second of three days of the Torero Classic, hosted by San Diego. FDU opened the day with a 7-0 loss to the Broncos, followed by an early-evening 10-0 outing against the Shockers to close the day.
One game remains in the Golden State for FDU as the Knights look to climb to .500 on the season and finish the weekend with two wins in the event after besting the host Toreros 5-4 yesterday, February 17.
Â
Beginning the day with a pair of walks to Broncos batters, FDU found themselves in a predicament with runners on first and second before allowing a single to Serena Hutchinsong to place runners in scoring position at second and third with no outs. Boise State capitalized with a two-run RBI single by Lindsey Walljasper to give her team a 2-0 lead on the Knights in the first. After the Knights were retired in order in the bottom of the first, Boise State came back from the inning break with another pair of runs, one unearned, on three hits and one error to double their lead and go up 4-0 on the Knights. Freshman
Gabby Santora would record FDU's first hit of the day in her second collegiate start, though her teammates would be retired in order to leave a runner on in the second frame.Â
Moving to the third inning both teams would be held without a hit and each recorded a walk as the 4-0 lead remained in-tact. Adding two more runs in the fourth, Boise State would deliver the final score in the seventh inning, a seventh run to hand FDU their second loss of the weekend. In addition to Santora, only freshman
Abby Mitchell would record a hit in the ballgame.
Senior
Malori Bell made the start pitching four full innings allowing six runs on seven hits with five earned. She'd log three strikeouts before being relieved by sophomore
Payton Wagner.
Â
Closing the day against the Shockers who received votes in the latest Top 25 poll, FDU found themselves facing a tough task in the first of two meetings this weekend against the two clubs. En route to their 10-0 rout of FDU, Wichita State opened things up with a two-run first inning and a monstrous five-spot in the third to go up 7-0 after three innings. Out hitting FDU 6-2 on the day, the Shockers would add a trio of scores in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 10 runs, holding on for the run-rule finish as the Knights would fall in five frames. Graduate student
Courtney Mahoney had the lone Knights hit of the day as the fifth-year looked to start a new hitting streak after her previous stretch of three-straight games with a hit came to an end earlier in the day.
Head coach
Chris Foye turned to Wagner for the start and the sophomore was in line for the short end of the record after being charged for six earned runs in 2.2 innings before fifth-year southpaw
Alayna Savaglio was called in to limit the damage.Â

FDU finishes off the west coast trip on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. PT, 1 p.m. ET against the Shockers at the USD Softball Field in San Diego to put a bow on the Torero Classic.
