Knights Fall to Shockers in Torero Classic Finale

SAN DIEGO - FDU softball slipped to 4-6 on the season Sunday as the Knights were unable to tack-on a run facing (RV) Wichita State at the USD Softball Field on the third and final day of the Torero Classic. The Knights tallied three hits while the Shockers pulled together for 12 runs on 12 hits in a 12-0 victory at the neutral site.

Allowing hits to the first two batters of the day, Wichita State had runners on first and third for Lauren Lucas who reached safely on a fielder's choice. One out and three on proved to be a nightmare scenario for sophomore right-hander Julia Swan in the circle as the cleanup batter Lauren Mills rocked a grand slam to right centerfield to give the Shockers a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.

Swinging on a full count with two outs, Taylor Sedlacek etched the fifth run with a solo homer, extending the lead to 5-0. Each of FDU's first two batters were unable to reach base in their first plate appearance but sophomore Andreya Flores made contact for a single up the middle to give the Burgundy and Blue their first base runner of the day.

Witchita State added-on four more runners in the top of the second while three of FDU's four batters in the bottom of the inning were sat down on strikeouts. The final three runs of the day for Wichita State came in the top half of the following inning.

Sophomore Jess DeWitt and junior Megan Berg would each log hits to round-out the scorecard for FDU on the day.

Head coach Chris Foye turned to his stable of arms in the fifth-inning game with Swan pitching two innings, followed by graduate student Alayna Savaglio, senior Malori Bell and sophomore Payton Wagner each pitching one inning of work. Knights pitchers combined for eight strikeouts in the game which set a new season high through 10 games in 2023.

Looking ahead to next month, FDU takes part in four games in Baltimore, Md. in the Morgan State Round Robin, facing UMBC and the host Bears on March 4, followed by a doubleheader against Morgan State on March 5.
