Roberts' Game-High 20 Points Snaps FDU Skid as Knights Top Wagner on the Road

FDU has now clinched a home quarterfinal game on March 1 the upcoming NEC tournament

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Behind three Knights in double-figures, FDU men's basketball snapped their two-game skid in Northeast Conference action to win their sixth road NEC contest of the season Saturday as FDU topped Wagner 66-48 to clinch a home game in the 2023 NEC Men's Basketball Championship at 7 p.m. on March 1. Moving to 16-13 overall and 9-5 in the NEC, the Knights have also secured a winning record in the 2022-23 regular season with just two games to go in the campaign.

Looking to string together runs against a Seahawk team that allows opponents an average of 62.3 points per game, Tobin Anderson's squad traded buckets in the early minutes before building a solid eight-point lead with 14 minutes to play in the opening half. Freshman Brayden Reynolds and graduate student Demetre Roberts combined for a 7-0 stretch to extend the Knights' lead to 13 midway through the period. Shooting 2-for-7 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes, the Knights turned to their shooting from the field, popping off for 13 field goals, shooting 54 percent.

Heading into the break having outscored Wagner 7-0 in the final two minutes of the half, FDU was bolstered by five of nine first half points by sophomore Ansley Almonor who would go on to finish one rebound short of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.

Out of halftime the Knights scored four unanswered points after the Seahawks opened the festivities with a layup 37 seconds into the final 20. Sticking true to the game of runs, Reynolds would string together a 5-0 run himself with thanks to a pair of layups and a made free throw with just over 13 minutes remaining. Getting as close to within three, Wagner was kept at bay in the critical last 10 minutes of play as Wagner would tack-on just 15 points in the half as FDU pulled away with an 18-point victory away from home.

The Knights cotntinue to be road warriors with one last away trip on the schedule for the regular season as FDU heads to Saint Francis U (Pa.) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 23 before the regular season finale at home on Senior Day, welcoming in St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
