FDU Suffers Tough Day at Fairfield Invitational

FAIRFIELD, CT- Women's Volleyball (3-7) fell in 3 sets to both Washington State (8-1) and Howard (3-5) in today's matches on the second day of the Fairfield Tournament at the RecPlex in Fairfield, CT.

Match 1 vs. Washington State

Inside the Box Score
  • Samantha Wittholz delivered three aces on the strong WSU defense. Emily Van O'Linda and Madisyn Beirne each had one. 
  • Beirne led the team in kills with five.
  • Van O'Linda picked up everything with nine digs for the match. 
  • This was the first time the Knights faced off against a Pac12 opponent.
How it Happened
  • Washington State started strong in the first set going up 8-2 and would go on to win 25-9. 
  • In set 2, Washington State kept the Knights out of system and made it hard to attack aggressively, delivering a 25-15 win.
  • FDU started set 3 with energy and competed closely with Washington State early in the set. The Cougars began to slowly pull ahead going on several short runs to build a gap and take set 3, 25-15.

 Match 2 vs. Howard

How it Happened
  • Set 1 went back and forth but with the score tied at 14, Howard rattled off eight straight points and win the set 25-16.
  • In set 2 Howard cruised to a nine-point lead at 20-11. The Knights responded with a 7-2 charge led by a block by Spiridonakas and Fucka and then a kill by Spiridonakas. Howard regrouped after taking a timeout and closed out the set 25-18.
  • In Set 3 Howard played a strategic game with good placement and tooling off the block keeping FDU out of system and finished the match with a 25-13 set win.
The Road Ahead

FDU travels to Bethlehem, PA on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to take on the Lehigh Hawks in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The match will be live on ESPN+
