Point-for-Point, High Energy Match Ends in Close Loss for FDU

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS. - FDU women's volleyball (0-1) challenged Tarleton State (1-0) to kick-off their 2022 season at the Texan Invitational, hosted by the Texans. First-year head coach David Nguyen and the Knights fell to the home side, 3-1.
 

How It Happened

Set One
  • The Knights started the game off right with an instant kill from Tatijana Fucka, followed by an intense point-for-point series down the stretch.
  • The Texans went on a four-point run after the 14th point of the set.
  • Tarleton's power player Megan Haynes was a challenge to defend, hitting .600 with seven kills in the first set alone.
  • FDU came back from a seven-point deficit to bring the contest within reach, though the Knights would drop the set, 21-25.
  Set Two
  • Continuing with the back-and-forth pace, FDU pulled away on their 13th point with an overpass kill from Tessa Fisk and a change in energy from Nguyen's side to win the set 25-19.
  • Newcomer Kylie Not tallied six kills (.375).

Set Three

  • The loud and intense set ended 27-25 in favor of the Texans.
  • FDU saw four kills each from Fucka, Nott and Sofia Rampazzo.

Set Four

  • The Knights got a slow start falling behind six points (9-3) but momentum shifted their way to close the gap mid-match (14-11.)
  • Fucka crushed an 11-foot ball down the line for the 21st point and led the team in kills (12).
  • FDU dropped the final set 25-23.

 "It was great to get back on the court," commented Nguyen after his first match as the Knights' head coach. "Unfortunately we did not end on the winning side of the column but our team fought every point. An incredible match from Tatijana and Kylie; they were were terminal and aggressive. Our energy on the court and bench made was also incredible."

 
The Road Ahead
 

FDU wraps up the opening weekend of the 2022 season tomorrow, Saturday, August 27 with two matches in Stephenville as part of the Texan Invitational, first taking on ULM at 11 a.m. EDT, followed by a matchup against Northwestern State at 2 p.m. EDT. Both contests will air live on WAC International.
