TEANECK, N.J. - Fairleigh Dickinson baseball defeated Sacred Heart, 7-5, in the regular-season finale Saturday as the Knights turn their attention to the opening round of the 2022 Northeast Conference Championship when the team faces #1 LIU on Thursday in Norwich, Conn. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
The Knights hosted their first-ever Little League Day before the game at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex, where each league from District 6 was honored.
The team celebrated the program's eight seniors and graduate students: Joey Kosowsky, Brendan Medoro, Nick Evangelista, Evan Stewart, Tom Ruscitti, Phillip Romeo, George Rosales, and student manager Anthony DiBlasio in a pregame ceremony prior to the first pitch.
How it happened
- SHU opened the scoring with a two-run homer to the right-center in the top of the first.
- The Knights responded with a run in the bottom of the third. Joan Sosa reached home on an RBI double to left field by Tom Ruscitti.
- The Pioneers extended their lead to 1-5 with a solo home run in the fourth inning and a two-RBI double to right-center in the fifth.
- FDU scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 5-5. Justin Sierra scored on an RBI single to left field by Sosa; then Sosa and Ruscitti reached home on Tommy Verga's RBI single to right field. Harden scored on an RBI double to right field by Edward Novoa.
- Sosa crushed a two-run walk-off home run to lift FDU to win over SHU. The Knights finished the game with 12 hits and seven runs.
Inside the box
- Joey Kosowsky threw 4.1 innings in the start, allowing five earned runs on six hits and striking out five. Brendan Medoro improved to 2-5 on the season and tossed the final inning with a strikeout.
- Sierra went 3-5 with one run, double, and a stolen base.
- Sosa went 3-3 with three runs, three RBIs, and a home run.
- Ruscitti went 3-4 with one run, one RBI, and a double.
FDU finished the regular season with a record of 24-28 and 16-11 in the NEC.
