HACKENSACK, N.J. - On a beautiful spring day, the Fairleigh Dickinson softball team and LIU did battle in Northeast Conference action with the series tied at one-game a piece. FDU turned to senior southpaw
Alayna Savaglio to handle the duties in the circle for the second time in the series.
Savaglio threw 4.1 no-hit innings, though would get into trouble in the fifth allowing five runs scored off the bats of the Sharks to put them up 5-0. Allowing another run in the following frame, FDU would knock-in two runs in the bottom half of the sixth beginning with a solo home run by junior shortstop
Cassidy Triska who finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon. The round-tripper was her 14th of the campaign, though the blast to center wouldn't be her only shining moment of the afternoon.
Freshman
Sabrina Javorsky made the start behind the plate and batted in the second FDU run of the ballgame by way of an RBI single down the right field line to score four-time NEC Rookie of the Week
Jess DeWitt who served as the Knights' second baseman, cutting the deficit to 6-2.
Julia Swan came on in relief of Savaglio and allowed two runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 8-2 in favor of the visitors. The Knights would mount an impressive comeback in their final turn at-bat, though the effort would fall short. Senior
Riley De Laval got on base with an infield single, followed by Triska's second home run of the game to left field, scoring the Covington, La. native in the process to bring FDU within four. Two batters later with one out, rookie
Andreya Flores would rock her sixth home run of the season with a blast to deep left to make it 8-5. Junior designated player
Hailey Ramberg would bring the Knights within two with a home run of her own and third of the season, though the rally would be shortlived and the Knights would fall by a final score of 8-6.
The Burgundy and Blue close-out the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Wagner with critical NEC postseason complications live on NEC Front Row.
