Worth the Wait! Softball Tops Wagner in Doubleheader Sunday, Clinches Berth in 2022 NEC Championships

FDU has punched their ticket to Loretto, Pa. for the 2022 Northeast Conference Championship, the program's first trip to the postseason since 2015

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Fairleigh Dickinson softball made history in a much-awaited series against Wagner on Sunday as the teams did battle in two of the final three games of the 2022 regular season as the Knights clinched a berth in the 2022 Northeast Conference Championship, scheduled to begin next Thursday in Lorreto, Pa. at the home of top-seeded Saint Francis U (Pa.). FDU can finish no higher than third and no lower than fourth for purposes of seeding the double-elimination bracket.

In a 4-1 opening win, the Burgundy and Blue (24-22, 14-9 NEC) were out-hit 8-3 by the home Seahawks, though Savaglio would limit the damage to just one run which would come in the third inning. FDU would explode for a four-run sixth inning, capitalized by an RBI single off the bat of junior Hailey Ramberg who served as the Knights' designated player in the first of the twin bill.

Game two was a 10-inning thriller with the Knights besting the home side 3-1 in the nightcap with FDU's bats exploding for 10 hits, including the ninth home run of the season off the bat of four-time NEC Rookie of the Week Jess DeWitt who's been a mainstay in the top third of the Knights' lineup. Fellow freshman Andreya Flores hit 2-for-4 in the day's finale to extend her current hit streak to seven-consecutive games.

Malori Bell, the junior right-hander, got the start in the second game for Chris Foye's club and allowed just one walk and three hits in 10 innings of action en route to her fourth win of the campaign.

"I am so proud of all this team has accomplished this season but we are not done," said Foye. "They have worked hard and supported each other through the ups and downs and they are very deserving of the playoff spot they have achieved. I can't wait to see what they do going forward!"

FDU and Wagner closes-out the regular season tomorrow, May 9 at 12 p.m. live on NEC Front Row in the 2022 regular season finale as the Knights await their first round matchup in the NEC championship.
