ORLANDO, FL. -The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team (4-6, 0-0 NEC) improved to 4-6 after a dominant 6-1 victory over the Saint Joseph's Hawks (4-5, 0-0 A10) on Thursday night. The Knights won the doubles point and five singles matches to claim its fourth win of the season.
In doubles competition, the Knights raced two victories at No. 3 and No. 1 to pick up the point. Sophomore Gauri Bhagia and freshman Namie Isago defeated Paige Conrad and Alex Kramer, 6-1 at No. 3. At No. 1 graduate student Marta Bettinelli and senior Aleksandra Vorozheikina wrapped things up with a 6-2 win over Anna Kirk and Amanda Nava. At No. 2, juniors Shreya Gulia and Amina Lasheen lost their match to Emily Elliot and Stow Weiss, 7-6 (6).
In singles play, the Hawks responded with a win at No. 1 when Nava topped Gulia 6-1, 6-2 to earn their lone point of the match. The Knights answered with five consecutive singles wins. Vorozheikina struck first for the Knights as she easily defeated Weiss 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Isago topped Elliot 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4. Bettinelli earned a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Ireland Amato to clinch the match win for the Knights. At No. 3, Lasheen outlasted Fabiana Tort-Umpierre with a 6-2, 7-5 win. The match concluded as Bhagia beat Sophia Amato in a super tiebreaker 6-2, 4-6, 10-6, bringing the final score to 6-1.
Up next, Fairleigh Dickinson will travel to Flushing, N.Y. to face St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday, March 22 at 1:00 p.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center.
