NEW YORK - Start spreading the news, FDU men's basketball notched the fifth win of the season Friday as the Burgundy and Blue toppled Columbia 76-73 in overtime live on SNY. FDU moves to 1-1 in overtime play this season, matching the program mark from last season. Improving to 5-6 on the season,
Tobin Anderson's Knights return home on Sunday, Dec. 11 to face in-state rival NJIT at 2 p.m. live on NEC Front Row in the first home game for the Knights in nearly a month with FDU playing each of their last eight away from the friendly confines of Stratis Arena inside the Rothman Center.
Getting off to the early advantage, the Knights held the edge fueled by
Ansley Almonor's seven points while graduate student guard
Demetre Roberts would lead all scorers at the break with nine. Almonor would pour in the lid-lifting bucket to put FDU up two in the infant seconds of the game as the Knights would find themselves in front no more than four in the opening period. The whistles weren't kind to the visitors with nine fouls called against FDU while just five were called against home Columbia. Separated by 10 miles and the George Washington Bridge, the Knights and Lions would be locked in a six-point game at the break.
Coming out of halftime,
Joe Munden Jr. - practically in his backyard of Harlem, N.Y. - dazzled with 12 second-half points off the bench and a triple in the eventual overtime period. Munden posted a new season-best with a game total of 15 points in 23 minutes, shooting 5-for-7 from the field with his second trey of the campaign coming in clutch to charge the overtime effort. In a tale of two halves, the Knights' offense shined with 38 second-half points, though the late-half seconds would turn the tide Columbia's way but not without some brilliance from Roberts who kept FDU in the hunt with a layup at just about the 16-second mark.
A true game of ones and twos, FDU would shoot 42.9 percent from the field and 78.3 percent at the line while the long ball wouldn't fall their way as FDU went just 4-for-24 from downtown.
The first-ever win in the series with Columbia FDU has now won two-straight road contests with three of the team's five wins coming away from Hackensack. 2-0 at home in 2022-23, the Knights return to play against NJIT in the return game of the home and home series initiated last season at 2 p.m. only on NEC Front Row.
