COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With two goals in the first ten minutes of play, Maryland had everything going their way as the Terrapins finished-off FDU 5-2 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship Thursday, ending an incredible season for the Burgundy and Blue (10-6-3, 6-0-2 NEC). The loss was FDU's first since September 21, a non-conference defeat suffered at the hands of Manhattan.
Five different Terrapins scored in the postseason bout beginning with a second-minute goal from Stefan Copetti. Less than eight minutes later, Malcolm Johnston would double the lead for the Terps and put the home side up 2-0 before FDU would record a single shot attempt. After the second score, senior midfielder
Jordan Alonge booted his 47th shot attempt of the season, tjough the attempt would land wide right of the goal.
Before the halftime whistle, Albi Ndrenika would score a third goal for the four-time National Champions and send the Terrapins into the break up 3-0 while the defense held the Knights to just one shot - Alonge's - in the opening 45.
Sticking with the 11 on the field to close-out the first half,
Seth Roland's side booted two attempts, the first coming from
Jerónimo Leguizamón and the second off the cleats of
Kevin Leonhard. Maryland's fourth score would come in the final third of the match as Joe Suchecki tallied his first goal of the campaign. FDU's freshman
Matt Giraldo would answer back with an unassisted score in the 74th minute to put the Knights on the board with 26 to play. The goal was Giraldo's first on the banks of the Hackensack.
Hunter George scored the final goal for the Terps, their fifth, before
Hugo Bacharach flicked the ball to
Fallou Tounkara who navigated through some traffic and connected with Giraldo for the freshman's second goal of the match to finish with a brace.
NEC Goalkeeper of the Year
Spencer King would finish with three saves on 12 shots faced.
In his postgame press conference, head coach
Seth Roland remarked, "It was not the way we wanted to end what was an amazing season for us, winning the double conference and going undefeated in conference play. I think we didn't put our best foot forward in the end and yet, what I would say is we were outmatched. We knew Maryland was going to present challenges with how explosive they are and how dynamic and dangerous they are. We didn't have an answer for that, certainly in the first half, at times in the second. I'm glad we were able to get a couple goals and they had to clear a couple off the line. You can see how we're a good team that plays good football.
Roland continued, "I'm very proud of the guys, very proud of the season we had. We hadn't lost since September 21st, we had a 10-game unbeaten streak, so I'm very proud."
The Knights finished the campaign with just six defeats and out-scored opponents 30-24 over 19 contests since beginning the season at Lafayette on August 25. This was FDU's 19th NCAA tournament appearance.
